Some of the realities from history are so astonishing. We, human beings make perceptions so easily and often ignore the veracity of story. Such is life, people only look at your fortunes and ignore the sufferings.
Since childhood I was so intrigued about the stories of prominent public figures, superstars, celebrities and at times most wanted convicts. I am sure at least once in your life, you too would have envied their affluent lifestyle but we tend to see only, the things our eyes want. Isn’t it?
Every time I came across real life incidents, those always made me interested to know more and more about them. Netflix and Amazon Prime have taken home entertainment to a different level. There is abundance of information available about the historic events. I started my engagement on these media service providers with documentaries only.
Here are my top 5 picks, a must watch if you enjoy the real life changing stories.
1. The Crown Available on NETFLIX
The first on my list “The Crown” is a story about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Claire Foy, an English actress portrays the Queen in both the Season 1 and 2. She has played the role with so much grace and elegance. The documentary unfolds her time before she became the Queen, and after the reign, how courageously she managed the adversities, sacrificed her personal life and living for the dignity of the Crown. Apart from the Queen, you’ll be really impressed with some of the other characters, Winston Churchill by John Lithgow and Anthony Eden by Jeremy Northam. You’ll remember “The Crown” for its actors, cinematography, quotes and specially dialogues.
2. Kaagaz Ki Kashti Available on Amazon prime videos
To all the Ghazal fans like me, who admire his voice, this documentary cannot be missed. Jagjit Singh, revolutionized ghazals in 70s and 80s specially when the era was dominated by Glam rock, Hip-Hop and Pop. Once I saw his documentary, the same ghazals had much more depth and left a deep impact on me. His journey has been through so many ups and down, his early life struggles, singing at parties to get his first break, and then when he was at peak of his career he lost his son in an accident. I am sure once you finish this documentary, it will leave you in tears and you’ll explore his endless live concerts on Youtube.
3. Facing Ali Available on Amazon prime videos
Born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr and later converted to Islam, Muhammad Ali is one of the most inspiring athlete, who acclaimed the top spot in Boxing. I think this one is the most powerful, direct and outspoken documentary narrated by all the opponents who faced this fearless boxer in the ring. Some of the opponents share revelations of their personal life and how the first fight with Ali, completely changed their own lives, served them food and have better clothes. Some were even prepared to die in the ring. This documentary will definitely change the way you look at Muhammad Ali, forever!
4. Wild Wild Country Available on NETFLIX
There is a lot less known to people about Osho, the Indian Guru Shree Rajneesh. Wild Wild Country, revolves around his life, his personal assistant Ma Anand Sheela and how an entire community called Rajneeshpuram was built in the state of Oregon which caused a stir in the American history.
5. Narcos Available on NETFLIX
Pablo Escobar, Columbian drug lord once burned $2 million to keep his family warm. In Season one and two, this documentary revolves around the highs and lows of his life and how he created a million dollar empire through illegal trade of Cocaine and his face-off with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) that finally knocked him down.
